The Swansea road safety team are working hard to reduce the number of people killed or injured on our roads everyday. We provide an educational programme that starts at birth and offers support and advice at every stage of our citizen’s lives.

The process begins by reaching new parents at health centres, antenatal clinics and hospitals by raising awareness of the importance of transporting their babies and infants safely.

Next we offer education for the parent and preschool child through the introduction of the children’s traffic club. Here parents and their children receive our free resources quarterly, such as story books and games through the post.

Once a child reaches nursery and primary school we offer a mixture of support in the classroom and practical training, which is essential to young learners.

We offer practical pedestrian training in schools for 5-7 year olds through the kerb craft scheme. Here children learn about the road environment around their school and how to identify hazards.

Safe cycling training is available for 9-11 year olds and usually takes place on roadways marked in the school playground. This age group also visit our road safety sets at the annual “crucial crew” event, and are eligible to join our junior road safety club.

Secondary school children are given a variety of opportunities to find out more about road safety as we take our road show of events, interactive displays and road safety drama education to their schools. We reach Pre-Driver and young drivers which are the focus of a number of initiatives including the new Pass Plus Cymru Scheme. This is also offered at colleges and other locations where 17-25 year olds may be found.

The older road user is not neglected and we offer support and tailored advice for them.

We work with traffic engineers to make road safety a priority in any new and existing traffic schemes. The council has a database of over 20 years of police reported road traffic accidents in the Swansea area and we use this information to target our resources. We also consult with residents and community groups about the issues that concern them.

We work with the police and the safety camera partnership to identify and enforce these issues.

School crossing patrols – commonly known as lollypop men or ladies are also our responsibility. They perform a vital role in keeping children safe near school. If you would like to help keep children safe in your area, there is a national shortage of school crossing patrol staff, we need you!

We attend events all over Swansea to reach every age group and give out advice and information whenever possible. Our aim is to encourage people to use the road safety knowledge that they have already have: Don’t park near school gates, don’t drink and drive, remember to wear you seat belt, kill your speed!

Look out for us next time you are out and about or listen for our messages on National and Local radio, at cinemas and many other places within the county.
